제주 신화 그림책에 대한 유아들의 반응 연구

A study on children’s responses to Jeju mythology picture books

본 연구는 제주 신화를 주제로 한 그림책을 유아와 함께 읽는 과정에서 나타나는 반응을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구에는 제주시에 거주하는 만 5세 유아 12명이 참여하였다. 연구 기간은 2025년 1월 24일부터 2월 21일까지 총 5주간이었으며, 연구자는 유아들과 함께 제주 신화 그림책 5권을 읽고, 비디오 녹화, 오디오 녹음, 유아 면담, 연구 일지를 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 유아들은 제주에서 전해져온 신화를 믿기 어려워하며 인물들의 능력을 놀랍게 여겼고, 둘째, 신화 그림책 간의 상호텍스트성 뿐만 아니라 전래동화를 연상하며 꼬리에 꼬리를 무는 이야기를 이어나갔다. 셋째, 신화는 교육을 목적으로 구성된 이야기는 아니었으나 작품 속 인물들의 삶을 통해 선과 악 그리고 인생을 대하는 삶의 지혜를 배울 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통하여 신화 속에 감춰진 제주 지역의 문화를 알 수 있으며, 유아교육 현장에서 신화를 다룰 때, 하나의 사건보다 인물의 성장과 전체적인 의미 전달이 중요함을 시사한다.

This study examines the reactions of young children when reading picture books on the theme of Jeju mythology. Twelve 5-year-old children (seven boys and five girls) living in Jeju City participated. From January 24 to February 21, 2025, researchers read five Jeju mythology picture books young children for five weeks. Data were collected using through video recording, audio recording, interviews with toddlers, and research journals during the picture book reading process. First, this study found that young children had difficulty believing the myths that were passed down from Jeju Island and were amazed by the characters' abilities. Second, the story continues in a chain, reminiscent of traditional fairy tales the intertext between myth picture books. Third, although myths were not composed for educational purposes, we can learn wisdom about good and evil and how to deal with life through the lives of the characters in the works. Through this study, we can learn about the Jeju region culture hidden in myths. It also suggests that when dealing with myths in early childhood education, the growth of characters and overall meaning should be conveyed rather than a single event.
