Structural Determinants of Immigrant Integration: Trajectories of Migration and Settlement among Asian Americans in the United States

Conventional views of immigrant integration are rooted in an individualistic understanding of the process, with less attention to the broader social structures that may impose significant limits on individual endeavors directed at integration. Despite such relative lack of attention, it is essential to understand immigrant integration as embedded in a complex web of social structures intertwined with distinct migration histories and varying post-migration contexts of settlement. In recognition of such significance, this study draws on segmented assimilation theory and examines trajectories of migration and settlement among Asian Americans in the United States. Specifically, it investigates how contexts of reception in the host society, including factors such as government policies, public sentiment, and existence of ethnic communities, shaped the migration flow and integration patterns of five major Asian ethnic groups (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino/a, and Vietnamese Americans), along with immigrant socioeconomic background. Future work should continue to advance knowledge on the progress of immigrant integration among Asian and other racial/ethnic subgroups, with a greater focus on structural determinants that go beyond individualistic notions of immigrant integration.

이민자 통합에 관한 전통적 견해들은 통합을 개인적 과정으로 이해하면서, 개인의 노력에 중요한 제약을 가할 수 있는 사회 구조에 대해서는 상대적으로 부족한 관심을 보였다. 그러나 이민자 통합이란 고유한 이민 역사와 이민 후의 다양한 정착 과정 및 그와 밀접하게 연관된 사회구조적 요인들의 복잡한 관계 속에 내포된 것이다. 그러한 중요성에 비추어, 본 연구는 세분화된 동화 이론을 바탕으로 미국 내 아시아인들의 이주 및 정착 과정을 분석하였다. 구체적으로, 본 연구는 정부 정책, 대중 정서, 민족 공동체 존재 여부 등과 같은 주류 사회의 이민자 수용맥락이 이민자들의 사회경제적 배경과 함께 이주의 역사와 정착 형태에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지 미국 내 대표적인 다섯 아시아인 민족 집단(중국, 일본, 한국, 필리핀, 그리고 베트남계 미국인)을 중심으로 분석하였다. 향후 아시아인 및 다른 이민자 집단들의 통합 과정에 관한 연구의지속성이 요구되는데, 특히 이민자 통합에 대한 개인주의적 이해를 뛰어넘어 구조적 결정 요인들에 대한 더욱 깊은 관심이 필요하다.
