The Messiah prophecy in Isa 9:6-7 and MT-LXX Deviations

This study examines the textual differences between the Masoretic Text (MT) and the Septuagint (LXX) in Isaiah 9:6-7, a passage widely regarded as a Messianic prophecy. While the MT presents the child as possessing divine titles such as “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,” the LXX renders these titles differently, referring to the child as the “Messenger of great wisdom” and emphasizing peace and well-being for rulers. This research investigates whether these deviations stem from a different Hebrew Vorlage or from the interpretive tendencies of the LXX translator. By conducting semantic, syntactic, and grammatical analysis of both the Hebrew and Greek texts, this study explores the translator’s approach and the possible theological implications of the changes. The findings suggest that while there is a slight possibility of a different Vorlage, the LXX translator was likely influenced by theological biases, leading him to diminish the divine attributes of the child-Messiah. This study highlights the impact of translation as both a linguistic and theological act and underscores the responsibility of translators and commentators in faithfully preserving the original meaning of biblical texts.

본 연구는 이사야 9:6-7절에서 발견되는 마소라 본문(MT)과 70인역(LXX) 사이의 텍스트적 차이를 분석하며, 이 구절이 메시아 예언으로 해석되는 방식에 대해 탐구한다. MT에서는 이 아이가 “기묘자, 모사, 전능하신 하나님, 영존하시는 아버지, 평강의 왕”과 같은 신적 칭호를 지닌 존재로 묘사되는 반면, LXX에서는 “위대한 지혜의 사자”로 번역되며, 통치자들에게 평화와 건강을 가져오는 존재로 나타난다. 본 연구는 이러한 차이가 다른 히브리 본문(Vorlage)의 사용에서 비롯된 것인지, 아니면 LXX 번역자의 신학적 해석 경향에서 비롯된 것인지 검토한다. 이를 위해 MT와 LXX의 의미론적, 문법적, 통사적 분석을 수행하며, 번역자의 번역 방식과 신학적 의도를 규명한다. 연구 결과, 다른 Vorlage의 가능성이 완전히 배제되지는 않지만, 번역자가 자신의 신학적 견해에 영향을 받아 메시아의 신적 속성을 약화시키는 방향으로 번역을 수행했을 가능성이 높음을 발견하였다. 이 연구는 번역이 단순한 언어적 작업을 넘어 신학적 해석 행위임을 강조하며, 성경 번역자와 주석가들이 원문의 의미를 충실히 보존하는 책임을 지고 있음을 시사한다.
