장애인활동지원사의 최중증 근육 장애인 지원 경험

Experience of Supporting Persons with the Most Severe Muscular Disabilities by Personal Assistants of Persons with Disabilities

본 연구는 장애인활동지원사의 최중증 근육 장애인 지원 경험을 총체적으로 이해하기위해 활동지원사의 어떠한 내적 변화와 경험이 사회운동 옹호자로서의 활동지원사로 이끌었는지 지오르기(Giorgi)의 현상학적 질적 연구 방법으로 경험의 본질을 탐구하였다. 자료수집은 2023년 7월부터 2023년 9월까지 이루어졌으며 생명권보장연대활동가 1명을 지속해서 지원한 경험이 있는 6명의 활동지원사를 연구 참여자로 선정하여 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 분석 결과 34개의 중심의미, 12개의 드러난 주제와 5개의 본질적 주제를 도출하였다. 5개의 본질적 주제는 ‘사회적 존재의미’, ‘임팩트 있는 첫 만남’, ‘정체성의 혼란’, ‘희망의 길라잡이’, ‘더불어 살아가는 세상을 위하여’이다. 연구 참여자들은 최중증 근육 장애인을 지원하는 경험을 통해 차별받는 환경에서 인간의 존엄성과 정당한 지원의 가치를 회복하려고 하였다. 사회 불평등과 불공정에 맞서며 사회적 존재로서의 가치를 재발견하고, 공동의 목표를 실현하고자 제도적 개선을 위해 노력하는 과정에서 사회운동 옹호자로서의 활동지원사로 성장하였음을 확인하였다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 활동지원사의 지원체계 강화, 다양한 요구를 반영하기 위한 실천적·정책적 함의를 제시하였다.

This study explored how the lived experiences of personal assistants supporting individuals with severe muscular disabilities shaped their transformation into social movement advocates. Employing Giorgi’s phenomenological method, in-depth interviews were conducted with six assistants who continuously supported an activist from the Right to Life Protection Solidarity between July and September 2023. The analysis revealed 34 meaning units, 12 themes, and five essential themes: the social significance of existence, impactful first encounters, identity confusion, guidance toward hope, and striving for coexistence. The findings reveal that the participants, while restoring dignity and rightful support in discriminatory contexts, rediscovered their social value, pursued institutional improvements, and evolved into advocates confronting inequality. The study offers practical and policy implications for promoting support systems and addressing the needs of both assistants and care recipients.
