『東征記』 저자 徐希震 小考

Preliminary Research on Xu Xizhen, Author of Dong Zheng Ji(Records of the Wanli Korean War)

서울대학교 규장각에 소장된 『동정기(東征記)』의 저자 서희진(徐希震)은 강서성 위산현 출신이다. 명나라 만력 연간에 편찬된 『청주부지』에는 공부상서를 역임한 종우정이 서희진을 위해 지은 시와 소전(小傳), 그리고 익도 출신 어사 방가장이 그에게 보낸 증시가 수록되어 있다. 본고는 이를 바탕으로 서희진과 만력 연간 각신 장위, 배신 강사창, 종우정, 방가장 등과의 교유 관계를 규명하고, 나아가 하남 등봉현 지현 부매와 무안현 지현 이춘무의 막객으로 활동했던 그의 생애를 고찰한다. 『동정기』의 주요 내용과 특징을 분석하여 과거 급제에는 실패했으나 평범하면서도 강인했던 명 말기 한 ‘산인(山人)’의 일생을 조명하고, 만력 연간 사대부 중 국제적 시야를 갖춘 비전형적 사례로 제시하며, 소위 ‘산인’이 모두 ‘멸편(蔑片)’과 같은 무능하고 타락한 무리만은 아니었음을 밝힌다.

The Kyujanggak Archives at Seoul National University preserve a classical Chinese text titled Dongzheng Ji (Record of the Wanli Korean War), authored by Xu Xizhen, a native of Yushan County in Jiangxi Province. In the Gazetteer of Qingzhou Prefecture (compiled during the Wanli reign of the Ming dynasty), Xu is commemorated in a poem and short biographical sketch written by Zhong Yuzheng, a former Minister of Works. Fang Kezhuang, a Censor from Yidu, also composed a poem in his honor. Using these materials as a thread, this article investigates Xu Xizhen’s connections with Wanli-era officials such as Zhang Wei (Grand Secretary), and Ministry officials such as Jiang Shichang, Zhong Yuzheng, and Fang Kezhuang et al. It also traces Xu’s career as a Muke (private adviser) under local magistrates Fu Mei of Dengfeng County (Henan) and Li Chunmao of Wu’an County. The article concludes with an analysis of the main content, characteristics, and value of Dongzheng Ji, aiming to outline the life of a late-Ming “mountain recluse” (Shanren) who, despite failure in the imperial examinations, embodied perseverance in ordinariness. This study seeks to contribute a non-typical yet internationally contextualized case to our understanding of literati culture and social strata in the Wanli era—offering a corrective to the stereotype of the Shanren as merely incompetent or degenerate.
