This article explores the anti-fascist actions of Jewish Americans in Los Angeles in the 1930s and the 1940s. In the 1930s, when many Americans and the U. S. Government dismissed the danger of the Nazi regime and its anti-Semitism, a group of Jewish Americans in Los Angeles launched their actions against fascism. This article refers to the recent historical literature on Leon Lewis’s anti-Nazi undercover work under the umbrella of the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee and Hollywood Anti-Nazi League. Lewis’s anti-Nazi spy ring traced and stopped the German American Bund‘s and its American fascist allies’ plots to kill Hollywood Jews and to sabotage the U. S. Government’s war efforts. Hollywood Anti-Nazi League (HANL) openly denounced Nazism. The interwar and wartime Jewish American fights against antisemitism and fascism in Los Angeles defied Nazi Germany’s propaganda which depicted the Jews as a threat to American civilization. The HANL as well as Lewis and LAJCC warned of and foiled the Nazi plots to destroy American democracy.
