한국 전통 요소를 차용한 스트릿댄스 작품의 문화적 의미에 관한 고찰

A Study on the Cultural Significance of Street Dance in Korea that Utilizes Traditional Elements

본 연구는 한국 스트릿댄서들의 ‘한국적 퍼포먼스’에서 나타나는 ‘한국’과 ‘전통’의 의미를 문화연구의 관점에서 탐색하기 위해, 스튜어트 홀의 접합(articulation) 개념을 적용한다. 또한 문화 예술분야에서 ‘한국성’을 고찰한 선행연구들 중 정치적, 경제적, 사회적, 예술적 측면에서 ‘한국성’의 사회 구성적 과정을 추적한 연구들에서 이론적 틀을 뒷받침한다. 이를 바탕으로 4명의 국내외 맥락에서 ‘한국적 퍼포먼스’를 만들고 공연한 4명의 댄서를 인터뷰하여 자료를 수집하고, 관련 주제를 모아 항목화를 단계적으로 진행하는 점진적 코딩 방법으로 분석한다. 분석 결과 ‘한국적 퍼포먼스’의 의미는 ‘수용자의 요구에 의한 전략적 한국성 활용’, ‘예술적 탁월함과 다양성 영역에서 다르게 활용되는 ’한국적 요소’, ‘진정한 한국의 표현으로써의 전통’, ‘놀이와 만담을 통한 체화된 한국’이라는 핵심 주제들이 도출되었다. 이를 통해 나는 한국 댄스씬의 ‘한국적 퍼포먼스’는 지향점이 다른 사회적 이해관계들이 교차하며 다양한 요소를 댄스에 접합시키는 장이라고 주장한다. 이러한 논의를 통해 한국 댄서들에게 현재 댄스씬의 지형에 대한 이해를 심화하는데 본 연구의 의의가 있다.

This study explores the meaning of ‘Korea’ and ‘tradition’ in the ‘Korean performance’ of street dancers in Korea from the perspective of cultural studies by applying Stuart Hall’s concept of articulation. In addition, it draws the theoretical framework from previous studies that examined ‘Koreanness’ in the field of culture and arts, which traced the social construction process of ‘Koreanness’ in political, economic, social, and artistic aspects. Based on this, I conducted four dancers who created and performed ‘Korean performance’ in domestic and international contexts, collected data, and analyzed it using the progressive coding method that categorizes related topics. The results of the analysis suggest that although ‘Korean performance’ is often used as a means of necessity in terms of competition and livelihood for Korean dancers, there are points where it creates artistic and moral meanings. This study recognizes the strategic, artistic, and social meanings of ‘Korea’ for Korean street dancers and deepens the understanding of the current topography of the dance scene.
