The effects of a picture book-Based global citizenship education program on young children's multicultural awareness, global citizenship awareness, and sense of community

본 연구의 목적은 그림책 기반 세계시민교육 프로그램이 유아의 다문화 인식과 세계시민의식 및 공동체의식에 미치는 효과를 분석하는 데 있다. 본 연구의 대상은 C시의 S유치원 만 5세 유아반 2학급의 유아 36명(실험집단 18명, 비교집단 18명)이었다. 실험집단과 비교집단 교사는 모두 8주간 주 2권씩 세계시 민교육 관련 그림책을 유아들에게 읽어주었으며, 실험집단 교사는 그림책 기반 세계시민교육 프로그램을 동시에 진행하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 그림책 기반 세계시민교육 프로그램은 유아의 다문화 인식 향상에 긍정 적으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 그림책 기반 세계시민교육 프로그램에 참여한 실험집단 유아는 비교집단 보다 세계시민의식이 긍정적으로 변화하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 실험집단 유아의 공동체의식 또한 통계적 으로 유의미하게 향상되었으며, 협력적 행동과 공동체 참여 태도 역시 긍정적으로 변화하였다. 본 연구는 유아기의 세계시민교육이 다문화 감수성과 공동체적 가치 내면화에 효과적이라는 점을 강조하며, 그림책 기반의 교수⋅학습 활동이 유아기 세계시민교육의 실천적 대안이 될 수 있음을 시사하였다.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of a picture book-based global citizenship education program on young children's multicultural awareness, global citizenship awareness, and sense of community. The participants were 36 five-year-old children from two classes at S Kindergarten located in C City, with 18 children assigned to the experimental group and 18 to the comparison group. Both groups were read two picture books per week for eight weeks, selected for their relevance to global citizenship education. In addition to the read-aloud sessions, the experimental group participated in a structured picture book-based global citizenship education program. The results of the study revealed three main findings. First, the program had a statistically significant and positive effect on the improvement of multicultural awareness among children in the experimental group. Second, the children who participated in the program showed a greater enhancement in global citizenship awareness compared to those in the comparison group. Third, the experimental group also demonstrated a significant increase in their sense of community, particularly in cooperative behaviors and attitudes toward community participation. These findings highlight the educational value of implementing global citizenship education during early childhood, suggesting that picture book-based learning activities serve as a practical and effective approach for fostering empathy, multicultural sensitivity, and communal values among young children.
