Purpose: This study aimed to examine the relationship between nursing students’ perceptions of older adults and their age-friendly communication competency. Methods: A descriptive correlation design was used with 168 nursing students who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected through self-report online surveys, and analyzed in SPSS using t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlation coefficients. Results: No significant differences were found in the perception or communication scores between students with and without gerontological practicum experience. However, a significant negative correlation was observed between perceptions regarding older adults and communication competency (r=-0.39, p<.001). This indicates that more positive perceptions were associated with higher communication competence. Conclusion: In nursing education for elderly care, it is necessary to support improvements in age-friendly communication competencies, such as designing a multi-layered curriculum and creating an educational environment that enables learners to develop emotional awareness and empathy towards older adults.
