The genre of horror film, specifically Giallo film, has been elevated to an art genre by the fundamental inspirational work of director Dario Argento. <Suspiria, 1977> is great enough to be called the best film in Dario Argento’s filmography, illustrating his excellent techniques of image for expression. The author aims to analyze and consider Dario Argento’s original techniques to create horror, starting with his biography. As a work just like textbook equipped with all the elements necessary to a horror film, the film <Suspiria> does not suffer by comparison with recent horror films. The most important elements of horror films are the visual mise-en-scene and the auditory effects of music and sound. <Supsira>is very bold and strong in its use of mise-en-scene. The composition forming each frame also affects the depth of space, contributing to the creation of scary environment and atmosphere. The rhetoric of metaphor and synecdoche are used for amplifying the anxiety and causing uneasiness, showing the aesthetics by giving meaning to images. By utilizing extreme contrast of shot and angle of images, the characters’ psychological state in the space was realistically expressed, which amplified a grotesque feeling. In this film, the music and sound present a kind of catharsis by escalating a sense of fear to the climax. The main theme score dominated by low-pitched tone accords with the contents and thematic nature of this film, which works as Leit Motif. Moreover, the sound effect combined with its music and image creates the realistic sense of fear. Based on the contents mentioned above, this thesis aims to suggest a future direction for horror films, and also to imply the role of sight for the new creation.
