A Study on the status of international exchanges in North Korean Cinema

This study will explore and analyze the current status of North Korean Cinema since the 2000s, exploring their major achievements and which works were screened and evaluated internationally at overseas film festivals. It will also look at the contemporary and international trends of North Korean Cinema represented by the Pyongyang International Film Festival (PIFF) to prepare an important platform for the start of inter-Korean film exchanges. Some may argue there is little in-depth research on North Korean Cinema at this time, but the academic interest in North Korean Cinema remains steady. It is also true that the inter-Korean reconciliation mood is increasing and the interest and importance of North Korean Cinema in preparing for reunification is significant. Reality is that research on international exchanges of North Korean Cinema is not conducted in a wide and in-depth manner due to 1)the limitation of access to basic materials, 2)the absence of creative research methods for the North Korean Cinema 3)meager prior studies 4)poor support for North Korean Cinema Study. Thus far, the study on North Korean Cinema consists mostly of an overview and appreciation of individual works, using unconfirmed rumors and impressions and related personal interviews, except for some outlying studies with fidelity to Pyongyang. Therefore, this study places top priority on identifying facts, examining historical facts, and collecting information on accurate international exchanges of North Korean Cinema. Based on this, it distinguishes itself from existing research in establishing a discriminatory research methodology for inter-Korean Cinema exchange and research.
