Movie narration, depends on its ‘materials’ and ‘subjects’ as very critical factors. Materials can be selected from all aspects of daily life, and the subject is the intention or a goal of a writer or a director, in other words, its message. According to the type of materials or subject, the public preferences towards movies may vary. The status of materials and subject in the process of making a movie can be known by only the fact that items most mentioned in reference to a crisis of Korean movies are ‘palpable materials’ and ‘hackneyed subjects.’ Therefore, this paper is aimed at helping creative creation of movies through the study of materials and subjects of movies. This study presents roles of conditions for being ‘audience-friendly’ and ‘novelty’ in selecting materials for commercial movies, and the basis of a claim that ‘universality’ and ‘timeliness’ should be secured upon selecting a subject. The movie <Rampant> was selected and studied in order to analyze how the studies on these materials and subjects could be used for actual movie works. From the aspect of materials, the movie <Rampant> was selected since it was both familiar and new to the public. From the aspect of subject, it was universal but ‘timeliness’ was not achieved. Looking at the result, it was a box office failure. Since it is shows the tendency of recent Korean movies in terms of materials and subjects, it was selected as a subject for analysis. It is expected that this study could be an opportunity to expand and deepen discussions on development of Korea movies and to offer an alternative to overcoming a crisis and development of Korean commercial movies.
