Jacques Audiard’s films have the characteristics of hybridity in terms of genre, character, cinematic style, etc. In particular, his films complete the style and theme of a work through the aesthetics of contrast. <The Beat that My Heart Skipped> is the work in which Audiard’s own aesthetics of contrast was used throughout the film. In this work, Audiard depicts the essence of human existence through the image of Thomas in conflict in the boundary between reality and ideals. As a method of expressing this, he used the contrasting layout of characters, and the contrast between genre narratives and free-genre narratives. Also, by producing contrasting rhythm using another style of image, or smashing disparate sounds, he audio-visually expressed Thomas’ dualistic inner world. Audiard’s aesthetics of contrast is a cinematic methodology to get at the truth through the process of considering the conflicting ideas. Audiard describes another hope for life that the essence and imperfection of human existence standing dangerously on the borderline with contradiction has through the aesthetics of contrast used in various styles.
