A Study on the Expression Method of Time and Memory Appeared in <Sans Soleil> by Chris Marker

The purpose of this dissertation is to study some methods to express the time and remembrance that appear in Chris Marker’s documentary work, <Sans Soleil>. Marker’s <Sans Soleil> brings snippets of past, present and future images together from memory, leaving the story open-ended. Marker created this work as if he had written a poem, expressing an image of the reality and remembrance in the documentary. For him, any form of remembrance can remain. Memory is something that should remain forever, rather than disappear after a moment. He attempted to express the time and remembrance that surpass the past-present-future, using black leader, freeze frames and Simultaneity of the Non-simultaneous. This is Marker’s argument about the time and remembrance that appear in the whole of the movie <Sans Soleil> and is an expression of images surpassing the world of space and time that a collective remembrance has. Through this film, Marker showed that all images can be transformed and through this process they can remain as memory. From this study, I claim that the memory of people is recreated as a new image and concluded that they are located in collective memories beyond their past and present.
