In Carol, about a romance in early 1950s New York between a married mother, Carol and a female department store assistant, Therese, Todd Haynes has embraced stories that explore the complexity of sexual and identity politics in the social context of post-war America while obeying the natural rhythm of any love story. Haynes inspired by some classic films such as Brief Encounter and Citizen Kane, with its methods for binding the viewer to a character but also that structural doubling. And he use point of view, unique framing and blocking, and other formal elements in order to immerse the viewer him or herself into the lesbian love story. Carol and Therese are captured through the careful play of cinematic space, color, and composition in Haynes’own filmic and visual references. The viewer recognize in the Therese’s desiring gaze an awakening into subjectivity. Her subjectivity or point of view is focalized in this film’s main narrative. Visualization works with the art concepts and soundtrack to diffuse eroticism and anxiety throughout the film. In Carol, Haynes has directed a masterpiece of the new queer melodrama with his unique cinematic strategies.
