An Analysis on the Relationship between Narrative Structure of TV Drama and Audience Ratings

Among the features of the drama, repetition and cliffhanger are often disparaged as clichés. However, these elements are in fact essential for drama and narratives are based on them. The unique features of drama are designed to capture audience ratings. In other words, the narrative structure of television dramas and viewer ratings are in an interactive relationship. In this aspect, it is noteworthy that the narrative structure of the SBS drama Romantic Dr. Kim Sabu and the trend of audience ratings change correspondingly Romantic Dr. Kim Sabu wisely utilizes discontinuity and segmentation between episodes, which is an inevitable condition that must be accompanied when the drama, dramaturgy, is aired in the medium of television which has a tightly organized time schedule. This paper deals with Romantic Dr. Kim Sabu as an appropriate example to show the relationship between the narrative structure and audience ratings. It analyzes the narrative structure of the Romantic Dr. Kim Sabu in detail and reveals how the narrative structure correlates with audience ratings. Through this, the present study tries to reconsider the importance of the aesthetic element of narrative structure, which has been regarded irrelevant to the audience ratings.
