One of the latest trends in films is use of various aspect ratios for the theme and suitable storytelling. Composition is a very important element in making a shot in a film. In emotional aspects, it is divided into static, dynamic, or neutral shots, and also, visually, it is classified according to the visual form and functions, based on symmetry, balance, diagonal line, randomness, contrast, etc. These elements of composition can be effectively used in each shot of a film to enhance the intent of the director and add aesthetic effect. The visual and aesthetic compositions used in the film <Ida> were created by critical observation and intuition of the director and added new meaning and standards to film shot composition. Especially, negative space used throughout the film was a direct challenge to the traditional composition of golden ratio and brings profound thematic discussion while proposing a new format in visual image. The purpose of this study was to examine implicit meaning of the compositions used in main scenes of the film Ida. Meanwhile, the study looked into the formats through which individual compositional elements provide harmonious or disharmonious elements and discussed their connection to the theme and story before establishing new concepts and direction of composition.
