Conceived as a film production project of the Nara International Film Festival, <Midsummer’s Fantasia> is an independent art film completed by the support from a number of international film festival production funds, independent film support funds, etc. Production funding from film festivals enables the film festivals to function as a distribution platform as well as a main agent of the production, and provides a rare opportunity to struggling independent film makers under not so favorable circumstances. The above-mentioned project is an international co-production film between Korea and Japan, co-produced by a world-renowned Japanese master filmmaker Kawase Naomi, aiming at international film festivals and art film theaters from the development stage. The film has been awarded by the Busan International Film Festival, the Seoul Independent Film Festival, the Korean Association of Film Critics Award, etc., and has attracted more than 30,000 viewers, since its theatrical release in Korea. This study describes the film’s development and production processes as a case study on internationally co-producing independent art films, and considers how the project could derive creative work from various limitations and challenges. Furthermore, covering issues on distribution of domestic art films, this study seeks to find solutions on how to make art films sustainably.
