Currently, Korean television program providers and platform operators are using different metadata systems. The absence of metadata standards in the Korean broadcasting environment has created serious problems in terms of television content distribution efficiency and users right. Therefore K-meta, a Korean Broadcasting Metadata Standard System, is to promote television program distribution, revitalize the Korean broadcasting industry, and guarantee user rights. The standardization of broadcasting program metadata system is quite essential in order to respond effectively to the rapidly changing media environment such as N-screen, multi-platform media usage, smart mobile media, etc. K-meta, a Korean Broadcasting Metadata Standard System, has been setup based on the three major principles of international interoperability, adoption easiness, convenience by users. Using a standardized metadata system, it is possible to collect and analyze usage information, and respond effectively to the rapidly changing media environment. The metadata standardization of broadcast content is also the ‘linchpin project’ to build and activate a digital ecosystem. In addition, it is very helpful to promote users’ convenience and access to what they want to use.
