Background of <True Grit> which was a remake by Coen brothers can be classified to era and style of the western in revisionism where order of civilization was already established. But this film follows syntax of traditional hero narrative enough to feel respect for western heros. This is very unique point that this film has, which makes one give attention on interpretation of the director about the western. In the modern society where mythical hero does not exit any longer, idealized nostalgia for the past becomes dominant tendency in the western. Here, meaning of the west is represented as western space, and life of a hero whom modern people should model has mutual relationship with spatial image of the western. Iconic space of the western affects its art of narration and moral value. Thus, to enlighten moral value for modern people who live in the world where a hero disappeared, icons of genre are needed. However, the west that <True Grit> remembers and suggests is not an world of mythical hero. Coen brothers do not stop in mythical illusion of the western but show cold and realistic ending, talking about importance of attitude about justice in the midst of ‘real courage’. Accordingly, Coen brothers hope through <True Grit> that the western can contribute to forming a foundation related to our present attitude and value.
