With increasing global interest in communication between artists, telepresence is becoming the centerpiece of the 21st Century. This paper will explore the use of telepresence technology in arts education. Specifically, this study will analyze CalArts Professor Sara Roberts’telepresence experiment: Pan-temporal Circle, a series of cultural mash-up sessions involving American and Korean students from diverse arts discipline backgrounds. The study will also summarize findings on telepresence applications in arts education in regards to their basic function, advantages and disadvantages, how they compare to each other and future applications of telepresence in the field of arts. There is a great need for international communication between artists, instructors, performing arts managers, administrators and theorists in integrated media and telepresence. Through experimenting with workshops like Sara Roberts’s Pan-temporal Circle arts education can benefit by transgressing the ever-changing boundaries of arts and technology.
