Within the Korean Movie Industry, the major companies’ vertical integration has changed the system of investment-distribution has altered into invest-producedistribution. This shows the impact mainstream industries are able to control the development of ideas. These companies are also lessening their respect toward the creators’ creativity and focuses more on making products with a more mechanic and repetitive taste. Andrew Horton purposes the mainstream vertical integration has caused bland and predictable script to be made. His solution to this problem is to focus the scenario on the carnivalesque characters. This report shows the analysis of the two movies based on Andrew Horton’s carnivalesque characters. These two movies are Tim Robinson’s <Dead Man Walking>(1995) and Chang Dong Lee’s <Oasis>(2002). These script have impressive achievements within its criticism and from an entertainment standpoint. The analysis of these two movies will focus on one thing they have in common: the build up of the “antagonistic protagonist” and how they affect the story. I define that an antagonistic protagonist is an antagonist toward a main character within the movie, but is a protagonist when you look at the character him/herself or has a promiscuous personality. Being one of the main characters of the story as a protagonist, while being in conflict against another main character as an antagonist, the combination of the two roles have been the foundation of the phrase, “Antagonistic Protagonist”. In order to determine the level of perfection of a character within a script containing carnivalesque characters, the character’s traits must be explain with detail. This makes the character’s undeterminable, polyphonic, contradicting, destructive personality able to be in harmony with each other creating a balance between these various qualities. This thesis has observed the creative theory and guidelines of works of art that provide variation and authenticity and how it affects the story as a whole. This is a suggestion to have multiple perspectives of the movie industry that is being fast paced by the increase of mainstream vertical integration.
