The Korean commercial films showed the extreme rise and fall for over ten years from late 1990s to 2008. This study aims at suggesting critical alternatives by analyzing and comparing the productions of five high profit films with five low profit films representing the period and by examining how the compositional characteristics were accepted by the audience. The high profit groups and low profit groups showed extreme results in sales although they had equal or similar collective characteristics in different aspects including the scale of production cost, the career of the film director, cast and characteristic of genre. Particularly, the two groups showed marked differences in the number of scenes, the number and length of shots, the size of shots and the nature of shots according to the camera movement. Such differences in the two groups are interpreted to have had a decisive influence on the realization of verisimilitude of these films, which gives significant suggestions regarding the success or failure in the communication with the audience. Now that restoring the audience confidence in Korean films is a top priority, the necessity of studying and understanding the compositional aspects of films is urgently required before production of films.
