A Study on the Pre-Production of Low-Budget Film, Summer Whispers

Hanryu, or Korean wave phenomena took place about ten years ago. Korean pop culture such as TV dramas, songs, and movies spread all over the Asian countries. Korean actors played a leading role in Hanryu became not only Korean stars but also Asian stars. The Korean wave sweeping across Asia and the popularity of Korean actors helped to raise the brand awareness of Korean companies and the competitiveness of Korean industries in Asian countries. Coming into 2005, however, the great vogue of Korean wave was weakened and the bubble of Korean film industry was begun to break. By illogical cost of film production considering the size of Korean film market, declining sales in overseas market, reducing the screen quota, and breakdown of the value-added copyright like DVD market, Korean film industry got more and more difficult. The situation of Korean film industry had a hard effect on low-budget independent film and art film. Lately, Korean film market is unconcerned with lowbudget films. So, it is too much difficult to fund raising and distribute low-budget films and art films. What is the wise way to handle the crisis situation of Korean film industry? Even though it is taken as read, now is the time for us to make new and striking plan and cut down expenses of film production. If we make a creative low-budget film with audience appeal, it will encourage hope to Korean filmmakers and Korean film industry that are depressed. In that sense, this study searches for the right plan and reasonable system of film production through low-budget film, Summer Whispers(2008), that is released this year. This study focuses on examining the pre-production of Summer Whispers. I hope that this study will make an alternative proposal for the future of low-budget films.
