Analysis Study-Amending Production Process and Technique in Digital Cinema -Focus in Cinematography

Most of recent studies and discussion on HD film making and cinematography poses various problem where it mainly focuses on evaluating superiority of film vs. digital. This thesis will try to outline new direction for more steady HD production through diagnose of new changes in cinematography, emerging talent, their function, utilization of new talent and further development. The main goal of this study is to review contribution digital made to cinematography, find the true meaning of this important change and possibly suggest new direction for stability of HD production. In 2008 domestic HD production was less than 15% of total domestic production combined. Such statistic arises from lack of recognition from film-industry and passive attitude towards HD-productions. But worldwide spread of HD-productions and screenings are un-deniable trend. By the year 2015 Digital Cinema will be the main medium of world cinema community and domestic film industry will inevitably accept digital film production. Film is an art-form as well as a craft that interconnects a variety of skills and techniques. Digital film making is like a new born baby that over 100 years of cinema history gave birth to. This new form of media requires new way of understanding and skill different to that of conventional film media in various fields like camera mechanism and camera characteristics etc. Digital film-making is subdivided into more departments than conventional film-making. And because of its complex and new formats, more practical exercise and case studies is needed. And result of such study need to be developed and taught actively on an educational level. With that in mind, variety of focused workshops as well as technical seminars must be created for film community to feed fast advancing digital technique. By doing so, technical knowledge and utilization skills will cumulate and will be developed, which in my opinion would be most ideal. Unfortunately in this country such workshops are only held by a few camera-manufacturer or Film-committees. These seminars barely deal with the points named above and are very limited. Main focus of this study lies on the showing importance of new skills and talent, practical knowledge and a expanded recognition for new talent, as well as a new paradigm concerning the method of filmmaking and suggesting right approach for HD production. In detail, interviews with film makers and technicians of international and domestic field also their case studies were used. As per section in DIT, number of e-mail interviews were conducted with active DIT in the international field. Be noted this thesis can not reveal some of data retrieved from domestic film community since they are yet to be released to market.
