We often state that the most distinctive characteristic of films is the "diversity". In other words, a film consists of various complicated elements with diverse characters. My initial aim was to examine Stanley Kubrick's works from a cultural and technical perspective. However, the vast nature of his film works, which also connotes ideological elements, led me to focus on one of his works, A Clockwork Orange and analyse its mise-en-scene and framework, andultimately relate this to his other films. The period during which Kubrick's early works were produced was when the world was experiencing mental depression/agitation amid wars and defeats. Changes arising from these circumstances demanded a transformation to a heterogeneous world, wholly different from the world they were familiar with and such phenomenon is replicated in his other films. The inner movements portrayed in his film isolated space, good, evil, passion and retaliation/revenge act as an inner voice expressing social insecurity and isolation. These types of emotions represent completely isolated and anonymous humannature. The principal characters in the film find it difficult to express themselves and communicate with others in a society where human relationships are extinct. What is it that they want? Through "A Clockwork Orange", Stanley Kubrick further explores problems lying in human relationships; The fact that human relationships are distorted, which maybe the primary cause of violence and that every man is disconnected from each other where ultimately the real humane relationship is impossible; these may be the intrinsic reasons for violence. Through the characters of the film, it criticizes the materialistic and egoistic nature of the modern world. He tenaciously rejects what he sees as the atrocious world and its constituents; environment, drugs, religion, family and so forth. He rejects US imperialism and a capitalist society that induces psychological deprivati on. In Kubrick's films, the world characterized by rapid growth and over-consumption is depicted as becoming more and more distorted and eventually leads to deterioration in humanity. The main characters in this film become trapped in this vicious cycle and become victims of such society. The only way out of this society is to escape i.e. death may be the last alternative choice. They curse the world and commit murder without any justifiable reasons. Their affliction and conflicts detach themselves from all relationships. In spite of all, Stanley Kubrick does not completely give up on his hopes. His film clearly demonstrates social problems that existin the modern world. My objective is not to interpret his films in ways commonly employed by others, which is to view them from the writer's mystic/metaphysical perspective using scientific methods. But inst ead, this thesis aims to bring scope for further.
