렌즈와 원근감

사진의 원근감 또는 perspective에 관해 상당한 개념적 혼란이 있어 보인다. 일부 전문 서적에서도 그런 문제가 발견된다. 이 혼란의 내용은 주로 원근감이 렌즈에 의해 결정되는가, 촬영거리에 의해 결정되는가, 아니면 둘 다인가 라는 것이다. 원근감에는 두 가지 요소 또는 변수가 있다. 그것은 상( image)의 크기비(앞뒤의 피사체들, 또는 한 피사체의 앞과 뒤 사이의 겉보기 크기 비율)와 상의 크기다. 전자는 쉽게 직관적으로 이해가 되지만 후자에 대한 이해가 부족한 게 혼란의 원인이다. 상의 크기가 왜 원근감에 영향을 주는지 살펴본 후, 촬영거리는 크기와 크기비 둘 다에 영향을 미치지만 서로 상쇄하는 방향으로 작용하기 때문에 결국 렌즈만이 원근감을 결정하게 된다는 것을 밝히고자 한다. 표준렌즈 또는 '자연스런 원근감'의 기준은 이미 알려져 있지만 위 논의의 연장선상에서 이 문제에 대해 검토해 보고, 끝으로 렌즈 화각에 따른 심리적 영향에 대해 간단히 살펴본다.

There seems to be a significant confusion around the concept of ‘lens perspective’. Such confusion can be found in some cinematography textbooks. The problem centers on whether perspective is determined by lens focal length, by object distance, or by both. ‘Perspective’, understood as the sense of depth, not as the mere image size ratio, has two aspects, or variables. One is the image size ratio (ratio of apparent szie between foreground and rear of an object), and the other in the image size itself. The former is intuitive and relatively east to grasp, but the latter is not and seems to be the source of confusion. After the discussion of why image size affects perspective, it is show that, though object distance affects both size and size ratio, the effects cancel each other, so only lens remains as the determinant of perspective. Though the standard of normal lens or ‘natural perspective’ is known, the issue is seen in the context of the above discussion, using concepts developed there. Lastly, psychological aspects of different lens perspectives are briefly discussed.
