Soap Opera Effect: The Influence of Frame Rate Variation on Film Representation

The Soap Opera Effect (SOE)refers to a phenomenon where motion smoothing technology artificially increases the original 24fps frame rate of films, resulting in an overly smooth and hyper-realistic appearance. While the technology aims to reduce motion blur and enhance image clarity, it can also alter a film’s immersive qualities and emotional delivery, often causing a sense of visual dissonance for viewers. This study analyzes the Soap Opera Effect as a mode of frame rate representation and explores its impact on film viewing experiences and audience perception. Through experiments conducted with university student panels, it was found that most participants experienced visual discomfort, reduced immersion, and changes in narrative comprehension when watching motion-smoothed films. However, some participants noted that the SOE could enhance the sense of realism and be effective for certain genres such as documentaries and sports content. The findings suggest that frame rate is not merely a technical parameter but a crucial element shaping cinematic representation and viewer engagement. Moreover, as high frame rate (HFR) technology becomes widespread in digital display environments, careful consideration must be given to preserving the director's original artistic intent and maintaining the cinematic aesthetics of film content.
