The othering of women and spatial representation in films is a key topic in feminist theory. Simone de Beauvoir, in The Second Sex, explains the othering of women, criticizing how women are defined as “others” in a male-centered world. Men are positioned as universal subjects, while women are defined and subordinated according to male needs. This process of othering is also evident spatially, with men occupying public spaces while women are confined to private ones. This renders women’s domestic labor as “invisible,” excluding them from the public sphere. Alfonso Cuaron’s film Roma visualizes these concepts, depicting the protagonist Cleo’s everyday life and spaces to illustrate her othering. Cleo is confined to private spaces, subordinated to the demands of her employers, which suppresses her subjectivity. This paper analyzes the representation of spatial othering of women in Roma using Beauvoir’s theoretical framework, discussing how space functions as a key element in constraining women’s subjectivity.
