A Study on Music Expression Methods in Silent Movies-Focusing on the movie <Wonderstruck> -

The development of the film was based on the form of early silent film, the filmic forms such as German Expressionism, Russian Formalism, and French Surrealism, and these films influenced the form and style of modern cinema. The music played in silent films without the presence of sound has a greater value and functions usefully than the music of any other speech film. It cannot be overlooked that it had an influence on the structure and functional development of music. In many studies, it is reported that film music has developed in earnest with various functional roles since 1927, when Talkie began, that is, recording technology was introduced into movies and recorded music was applied to movies. Due to the misconception that there is no sound, the study on the music of silent films has been neglected. Therefore, through this study, the characteristics of the film style of the silent film era and the characteristics of music applied to it are examined in detail, and this is an important foundation stone for the music of the silent film era through interpretation of the technical and functional elements and influences that have had on film music today.
