루카 구아다니노의 <서스페리아>에 나타난 공포의 미학-내러티브 및 함의, 영상표현기법을 중심으로 -

The <Suspiria>(2018) by Luca Guadagnino is a remake of <Suspiria> made in 1977 by Dario Argento, the master of film ‘Giallo’. Guadagnino showed the new possibility of tone, manner, and form of horror films without damaging the framework of original work. This film is developed in the motif of a story about Susie who comes abroad to Germany as a member of a dance company. Eventually, Susie eliminated the great witch Marcos who was the actual ruler of the dance company, emerged as the witch of Suspiriorum, and then established the new governance system. One of the characteristics of this film is the multi-layered narrative structure. Externally, it handles a witch’s reincarnation and murder case within an academy run by the witch. Internally, however, it applies and compares the chaotic political/social phenomenon, and conflict/antagonism with the young generation who blames the older generation who cannot fully condemn Nazi war criminals. It is also valuable enough to pay attention to the image expression technique such as shooting, lighting, editing, and sound of <Suspiria> by Guadagnino. Especially, the characteristics of main Mise-en-scene of this film are the utilization of color tone with low chroma and props as metaphor, symbol, and suggestion, and the utilization of the dance academy space as a means for creating a sense of fear. Also, in the scene where the witch’s magic is shown as curse, the connection of actions is geared in just like a gear wheel through the cross-cutting, which intensifies a sense of brutal fear. Moreover, in the aspect of sound, it divides the scene where the rhythm and tone of music and image accord, and the scene where they do not accord, which aims to differently deliver the sense of sensitivity. Like this, Guadagnino has broadened the horizon of genre by making the film containing the artistic aesthetics through the approach to expression method of narrative and image different from the typical expression methods of horror films. The author wrote this thesis to present the new direction of horror films in the future by deeply analyzing and considering the parts mentioned above.
