A Study on the North Korean defector Relief Model derived from Refugee Documentaries-Based on Documentaries <Across Land Across Sea>, <A Good Business> -

North Korean defectors are refugees who have escaped from North Korea for political and economic reasons. According to the recent survey, more than 100,000 North Korean defectors are hiding in China and Russia. In order to gain freedom, North Korean defectors must repeat smuggling secretly across borders between North Korea, China, Russia and Southeast Asia. This is why they need the help of human rights activists and brokers. The cost of escape ranges from 6 million Korean won to 15 million Korean won per person. The purpose of this study is to observe the Caleb Mission, South Korea’s leading North Korean human rights NGO, from 2008 to 2018 to find out how to raise funds for North Korean refugee, how to use it, and how to save it for the next project. In other words, the purpose of this paper is to draw up a sustainable ‘Relief Model’ for North Korean defectors. Over the past decade, the researcher has produced two documentaries, <Across Land Across Sea> and <A Good Business>, following the Caleb Mission’s escape project using the smuggler and the adoption projest for North Korean orphans from the border line between China and North Korea to the United States. According to an analysis of the visual data based on participatory observations, North Kore an defectors’ human rights NGO has a circular Relief Model consisting of the theme selection period, the execution period, the harvest period and the re-entry period. Th ey plan important North Korean defector projects, risk their lives to rescue refugees and inform the media, seek donations based on their reputation, and inject funds into other projects. Human rights issues for North Korean defectors are of global interest. However, it is rare to find a study that analyzes the issue of North Korean defectors from an economic perspective. This is why this thesis is valuable, and it is expected that follow-up research will be active in the future.
