This study explores the form of memory derived through the visual mediation method used to recreate the memory of historical events in a cinematic way. Making a historical event into a film is a representation of memories. Representation of these memories is an imaging of the flow of consciousness. Along with the representation of explicit memories, the explicitness of those memories is the gaze of the camera floating in space and time. As such, the characteristic of a movie is a visual image. The film, which deals with the 5·18 incidents examined through this study, mediates the memory of the 1980 Gwangju incident through symbolic, suggestive, metaphorical, and violent visual images. The memory derived in this way follows Gwangju in 1980, and the film regards Gwangju in 1980 as still an unresolved memory and expresses it as the absence of the state, national violence, trauma, and the damage of small citizens. It also shows that the memories reproduced in the movie can complement or transplant the audience's memories.
