<A Touch of Sin> takes the form of a ‘zhangzhui-style’ novel and combines four different episodes with thematic unity. Specifically, it deals with the issues of unfair distribution of social resources, the violent response to the reality of the lower-class people, the issues of human dignity and right to live, and invisible social violence. The film organically connects the four stories by constructing an extended narrative space that encompasses all regions of China and converging it into the narrative time, the Lunar New Year. The characters move all the way through the time and space of the narrative and exercise violence to save themselves in response to the violent situation. In the process, they are each satirized as each corresponding ancient chivalrous fighter, and metaphorsized as animals possessing their own qualities. Music borrowed mainly from traditional plays reveals the identity of chivalrous fighter which is inherent in each protagonist, and implies a dramatic situation. Overall, <A Touch of Sin> has the theme of the universality of violence in the daily life of Chinese society.
