Music Appreciation Pedagogy for Enhancing Empathy

인간은 공감을 통해 소통과 협력으로 이끄는 사회적 상호작용을 만들어내면서 생존해 왔고 인류를 발전시켜왔다. 이어지는 첨단과학과 인공지능 및 로봇에 의한 미래 사회에서도 생존을 위해 공감의 역할이 크게 작용할 것으로 많은 학자는 통찰하고 있다. 이러한 공감의 중요성에 따라, 본 연구는 음악을 활용하여 공감 능력을 신장시키기 위한 감상 교육이 어떠해야 하는지 그 방법을 모색하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 공감과 공감 능력, 공감과 예술, 음악 감상 교육에 관한 다양한 문헌들을 고찰해 보았고 이를 토대로 공감 능력 신장을 위한 감상 교육 방법을 모색하여 제시하였다. 연구 결과로서 공감의 유형을 정서적 공감, 인지적 공감, 동기적 공감으로 구분하였고 이들을 위한 교육 방법과 예시 들을 구체적으로 제시하였는데, 정서적 공감에서는 뇌과학과 생물학의 이론을 기반으로 BRECVEMA 모델에 의한 학습 활동을 제시하였고, 인지적 공감에서는 아이코닉, 내재적, 연상적 코딩의 감정 표현 형식에 따라 감각 어휘를 활용한 학습 방법을 제시하였다. 동기적 공감에서는 가치와 태도, 의지, 동기 등을 유발하기 위한 감상 교육 방법을 구체적인 예시로 제시하였다. 이러한 방법들이 학교 현장의 구체적인 수업 상황에 적용되고 그 효용성이 검증되어 학교 음악 교육에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

Humanity has survived and developed by creating social interactions that foster communication and cooperation through empathy. Many scholars have suggested that empathy will continue to play a crucial role in human survival, even in future societies shaped by advanced science, artificial intelligence, and robotics. In light of the importance of empathy, this study aims to explore how music appreciation education can be designed to enhance empathic capacity. To this end, a wide range of literature on empathy and empathic capacity, the relationship between empathy and the arts, and music appreciation pedagogy was reviewed. Based on this review, educational methods for cultivating empathy through music appreciation were identified and proposed. The study classified empathy into three types: affective, cognitive, and motivational, and presented specific instructional methods and examples for each. For affective empathy, learning activities were proposed based on the BRECVEMA model, drawing on theories from neuroscience and biology. For cognitive empathy, instructional methods using sensory vocabulary were suggested, aligned with forms of emotional expression through iconic, intrinsic, and associative coding. For motivational empathy, concrete appreciation strategies were presented to stimulate values, attitudes, volition, and motivation. It is expected that these methods will be applied in actual classroom settings, and that their effectiveness will be verified, thereby contributing to the development of school music education.
