In the 21st century, the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence has prompted renewed inquiry into what fundamentally characterizes human thought and emotion. This study posits that truly understanding oneself requires a deep comprehension of one’s own emotions, drawing on Spinoza’s ethics, which conceptualizes emotion as a change in the body’s power. By adopting an analogy with differential calculus, the analysis suggests that paying close attention to instantaneous emotional shifts offers a way to recognize how past, present, and future co-exist within the essence of emotion itself. Furthermore, defining the body’s nature as “eternal, boundless life and love” extends that same nature to emotion, revealing how deeply intertwined they are. This perspective illuminates the practical significance of the humanities in an era increasingly dominated by technology, illustrating that explorations of reason and emotion remain indispensable for understanding human existence. The study also emphasizes the interdisciplinary potential of this approach, bridging areas such as psychology, education, and cultural studies to provide a broader framework for grasping emotional complexity. Ultimately, by foregrounding emotion as an integral element of human life—one in which past, present, and future are embedded—this research reaffirms the continuing relevance of the humanities. It argues that, even in an AI-driven world, the cultivation of emotional insight and self-awareness remains essential for guiding personal development and fostering a genuinely human-centered society.
