The Resolution of Deficiency and the Expansion of Subjectivity in the Hospitality Structure of the Folktale Gubok Yeohaeng

본 연구는 설화 <구복여행>에서 결핍의 해결과 주체성의 확장이 어떻게 전개되는지 살폈다. <구복여행>은 주인공이 복을 얻기 위해 떠나는 여정을 그리고 있지만, 그 이면에는 인간이 삶 속에서 마주하는 근본적 문제와 그것을 풀어가는 방식이 압축되어 있다. 주인공은 배필, 재물, 명예라는 세 가지 화소를 통해 타자의 결핍과 마주하고 이를 해결하는 동시에 자신의 결핍을 메우게 된다. 과부, 노인, 이무기와 같은 사회적 약자를 수용하고 그들의 문제를 해결하는 서사는 조건적 환대와 무조건적 환대의 긴장 속에서 전개되며 삶의 방향을 다시 세우는 결과로 이어진다. 주인공은 결핍을 자각하고 길을 떠난 주체적 존재이지만, 그의 주체성은 타자를 맞이하고 그들의 문제를 해결하는 실천을 통해 완성되는 것이다. 즉 주인공의 주체성은 타인의 문제 해결에 참여하고 환대하며 환대에 응답하는 방식 속에서 확장되었다. 결국 <구복여행>은 단순히 복을 구하는 서사가 아니라, 결핍을 자각한 주체가 타자를 환대하면서 스스로의 삶을 재구성하게 되는 이야기로 이해할 수 있다. 이는 인간 존재가 홀로 완성되는 것이 아니라 타자와의 관계 속에서 충만해진다는 근원적 진실을 설화적으로 표현했다는 점에서 되새길 만하다.

This study explores how deficiency is resolved and subjectivity is expanded in the folktale Gubok Yeohaeng. While the tale narrates a journey to gain fortune, it also encapsulates fundamental human problems and their possible solutions. Through the motifs of marriage, wealth, and honor, the protagonist confronts the deficiencies of others and, in resolving them, addresses his own. Encounters with marginalized figures such as widows, elders, and imugis(mythical serpentine beings) unfold within the tension between conditional and unconditional hospitality, prompting a reorientation of life's direction. Although initially conscious of his own lack, the protagonist attains subjectivity by welcoming others and engaging with their struggles. Thus, Gubok Yeohaeng is not merely a tale of fortune-seeking but a narrative of reconstructing life's meaning through hospitality, expressing the truth that human existence is fulfilled only in relation to others.
