원가족 규칙으로 인한 부부갈등을 경험한 노년기 남성의 삶에 대한 내러티브 탐구

Narrative Inquiry into Marital Conflict and Identity in Older Men: The Role of Family-of-Origin Rules

본 연구는 노년기 남성을 대상으로 원가족 규칙과 부부갈등의 경험을 탐색함으로써, 이들의 삶을 심층적으로 이해하고 그 경험이 지니는 의미를 해석하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구는 참여자의 삶의 맥락과 내면의 변화를 포착하기 위해 내러티브 탐구 방법론에 따라 수행되었다. 연구 참여자는 65-75세 초기 노년기 남성 3명으로 구성되었으며, 자료 수집은 3회 이상의 면담과 관찰, 연구일지를 통해 이루어졌다. 분석 결과, 참여자들은 결혼 후 원가족에서 내면화된 삶의 규칙이 부부관계에서 드러나면서 배우자에 대한 불만이 누적되었고, 이는 반복적 갈등으로 이어졌다. 이 과정에서 가족 해체 가능성을 인식하고 자신을 성찰하며 관계의 의미를 재고하는 경험을 하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같은 논의점에 도달하였다. 첫째, 참여자들은 원가족의 영향 속에서 형성된 가치관으로 인해, 결혼 후 아내와의 갈등을 겪으며 남편이자 가장으로서의 역할 정체성 혼란을 경험하게 되었다. 둘째, 참여자들은 노년기에 접어들면서 가족규칙의 재정립이 중요한 과제로 부각되었음을 인식하였다. 셋째, 따라서 노년기 남성이 부부갈등과 가족 문제를 객관적으로 인식하고, 가족 규칙과 정체성을 재정립할 수 있도록 심리적 지원과 개입이 정책적으로 필요하다.

This study explored the experiences of family-of-origin rules and marital conflict among older men to gain a deeper understanding of their lives and interpret the meanings embedded in these experiences. Using a narrative inquiry approach, the study examined the contextual and internal changes in participants’ life stories. The participants consisted of three early older adult men aged 65 to 75. Data were collected through multiple in-depth interviews, participant observations, and research journals. The analysis revealed that participants developed increasing dissatisfaction with their spouses as they faced marital realities inconsistent with the rules internalized from their families of origin, leading to recurring conflict. Through these experiences, they recognized the possibility of family dissolution, engaged in self-reflection, and reexamined the meaning of their relationships. The findings highlight three key points: identity confusion shaped by family-of-origin values, the need to reconstruct family rules in later life, and the importance of psychological and policy-level support for older men’s relational adaptation.
