일본에서는 전쟁을 어떻게 가르치는가?: 사회과 교과서에 반영된 ‘오키나와전’을 중심으로

The Pedagogical Representation of War in Japanese Social Studies Textbooks: A Case Study of the Battle of Okinawa

이 연구에서는 일본의 소학교 사회과 교과서에 나타난 오키나와전(沖縄戦) 관련 내용을 분석하여 그 특징을 탐색하였다. KH-coder을 활용하여 세 출판사의 교과서 내용을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 세 교과서 모두 오키나와전을 피해국의 입장에서 서술하고 있다. 오키나와전을 모두 미군 공격으로 인한 피해 서술에 중점을 두고 있으며, 집단자결 관련 서술에서는 ‘일본군 책임’을 회피하면서 ‘미군의 공격에 내몰려 발생했다’는 형태로 기술하고 있어 학습자가 미군에 의해 집단자결이 강요된 것으로 인식할 우려를 내포하고 있다. 그리고, 어린이나 학생, 젊은 청년들의 희생에 주목하고 있는데, 특히 히메유리 학도대 관련 서술에서는 증언이나 수기로 전쟁의 참혹함과 인도적인 비극성, 희생을 감성적으로 전달하는 형태로 서술되고 있다. 학도대의 참여 맥락이나 강요된 측면이 생략되어 있어 ‘국가를 위한 숭고한 애국 행위’로만 인식될 위험이 농후해 보인다. 일본이 ‘민주적이고 평화적인 시민성’ 육성이라는 사회과 목표의 본질에 더 충실하게 다가가기 위해서는 어두운 전쟁의 역사를 온전하게 마주하고, 진실을 더 투명하게 담아내기 위한 노력이 필요해 보인다.

This study analyzes how the ‘Battle of Okinawa’ is presented in Japanese elementary school social studies textbooks. Using KH Coder, this study examined textbooks from three publishers and identified the following patterns. First, all three textbooks portray the Battle of Okinawa primarily from the standpoint of Japan as a victim nation. Their descriptions focus largely on damage attributed to U.S. military attacks. In accounts of mass suicides, the texts avoid assigning responsibility to the Imperial Japanese Army, instead characterizing the events as ‘driven by U.S. military attacks.’ This framing may lead learners to infer that the suicides were forced by U.S. military actions. Furthermore, the textbooks emphasize the sacrifices of children, students, and youth during the Battle of Okinawa. In particular, coverage of the Himeyuri Student Corps relies on testimonies and memoirs that convey the misery and inhumanity of war in an emotionally resonant manner. However, the background to student corps mobilization and its coercive aspects are omitted, which may lead learners to view participation solely as a ‘noble patriotic act for the nation.’ To align more faithfully with the stated social studies goal of fostering democratic and peace-oriented citizenship, Japan should confront the darker aspects of its wartime history more directly and strive to present the historical record with greater transparency.
