무전공 대학생의 중도탈락에 관한 연구

A Narrative Study on the Dropout of Open Major College Students

본 연구는 D 대학교 자유전공학부의 학생들을 내러티브 연구로 초대하여 그들의 대학에서의 중도이탈에 대한 이야기를 듣고 그 경험에 관한 내터티브 연구를 통해 살아있는 현장의 이야기를 전하고자 하였다. 무전공 및 자유전공의 개설 및 운영 목적은 전공을 선택하거나 정하지 않고 대학에 진학하여 다양한 분야의 학문을 탐구하거나 탐색할 수 있는 기회를 통해 전공을 탐색하는데 제약을 없애고 자율성을 확대한 제도라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 일반 대학생의 중도탈락에 관한 연구가 아니라 자유전공 및 무전공 학생들의 중도탈락과 어려움에 대한 분석에 초점을 두었다. 연구 결과 D 대학에 진학한 대학생들은 다양한 전공탐색과 풍부한 전공선택의 기회를 누리며 활동하는 기대와 설렘으로 입학했지만, ‘1년짜리 학과, 1년짜리 소속감’으로‘억지로 꾸역꾸역 듣고 채워야 하는 과목’을 수강하며, ‘이름만 자유전공, 무전공, 실상은 필수교양과목 듣는 소속 없는 1학년’으로의 삶을 살고 있음이 보고되었다. 원하는 전공의 확신이 없거나 목표설정이 미비한 학생들에게 기회이자 희망이었을 이 자유전공, 무전공이라는 무대는 어떤 이들에게는 그 손길이 전혀 와닿지 않고 있음을 확인하였다. 그 결과 그렇게 그들이 궁극적으로 선택한 것은 자퇴(중도탈락)임이 보고 되었다. 본 연구는 이제 필연적인 패러다임의 전환의 기로에 선 자유전공, 무전공의 실질적인 지원방안을 마련하는 데 기초자료로 활용될 것을 기대한다.

This study involved students in D University's open major program in a narrative study, gathering insights into their experiences of dropping out. Through this narrative, I captured their lived experiences. The purpose of establishing and operating a open major program is to provide students with opportunities to explore and explore diverse academic fields without having to choose a major, thereby removing constraints on major exploration and expanding their autonomy. This study focused on analyzing the dropouts and challenges faced by students in open major programs, rather than examining dropout rates across all university students. The results revealed that students entering D University were excited and hopeful about exploring and choosing diverse majors. However, they were living as "first-year students without a major, effectively unrelated to the required liberal arts courses," with a "one-year sense of belonging" and a "one-year department." The "open major” which offered hope and opportunity to students with uncertain major aspirations or lacking clear goals, proved to have no impact on some students. Ultimately, it is reported that their final choice was to drop out. This study is expected to serve as a foundation for developing practical support measures for open majors, which are at a crossroads of an inevitable paradigm shift.
