국외 예술기반 연구에 관한 질적 메타분석

A Qualitative Meta-analysis of International Arts-Based Research

본 연구는 최근 10년간(2015–2025) 국외 전문 학술지에 발표된 예술기반 연구 19편을 대상으로 질적 메타분석을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 예술기반 연구는 단순히 예술을 활용한 자료 생성 방법을 넘어, 교사·예비교사의 전문성 성찰, 학습자의 비판적·시민적 주체성 형성, 지역사회와 사회정의 지향 실천, 그리고 인간–비인간·생태적 얽힘을 재구성하는 교육적 전환을 촉진하는 탐구 틀로 기능함을 확인하였다. 드로잉, 비주얼 저널링, 콜라주, 설치, 디지털·소셜미디어 기반 창작, 연구-창작 등의 예술 전략은 감각·정동·물질·관계의 층위를 가시화하며 기존 질적 연구에서 포착하기 어려운 지식을 생성하는 매개가 되었다. 참여자는 아동·청소년, 예비·현직 교사, 지역사회 구성원, 더 나아가 정원·식물·장소와 같은 비인간 존재에 이르기까지 확장되었으며, 모두가 의미생성의 공동 창작자의 역할을 수행하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해 본 연구는 예술기반 연구가 몸·관계성·다매체성·생태적 감수성을 중심으로 교육 연구의 패러다임을 확장하는 잠재력을 지님을 시사한다. 또한 예술기반 연구의 발전을 위해 다중양식적 리터러시의 강화, 협력적·지역사회 기반 실천의 확대, 변화와 상상력을 중심으로 하는 탐구로서의 예술기반 연구의 재이론화가 필요함을 제언한다.

This paper carried out a qualitative meta-analysis of 19 international arts-based research(ABR) studies published between 2015 and 2025. The aims were to examine transformative processes of learning and being related to the arts, as well as to explore the aesthetics of affective, ethical, and social transformation that characterizes ABR. Based on the meta-synthesis frameworks from Noblit and Hare (1988) and Sandelowski and Barroso (2007), the analyses grouped the studies into four dimensions: research purpose, participants, artistic strategies, and outcomes. ABR emerged as an epistemic practice that produces transformative knowing not merely as an expressive mode but also through its use of linguistic form. Affective transformation took place through emotional and embodied engagement, generating affective modes of knowing. Relational responsibility and responsiveness are the foundation for ethical transformation, acting out an ethics of “being-with” others. Social transformation took the form of arts-based activism and communal healing, building a new memory and social justice through participatory practices. Moreover, materiality and spatiality expanded the ontology of ABR, since art became a medium of change in its own right. ABR integrates affective reflection, ethical relation, and social practice, and provides a transformative paradigm of knowledge production, educational praxis, and the role of art in human understanding.
