The Influence of Biomedical Ethics and Self-esteem on Nursing Professionalism in First-year Nursing Students

Purpose: This study was to identify the factors influencing nursing professionalism and to search for the direction of nursing education to enhance the nursing professionalism. Methods: This research was descriptive survey design. Data collection was conducted with 120 freshman nursing students using structured self-reports questionnaires. Data analysis was performed by IBM SPSS statistics 24.0 using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, multiple regression analysis. Results: First, the average score of biomedical ethics was 2.74±0.23, self-esteem 3.55±0.46 and nursing professionalism was 3.79±0.47. Second, factors significantly affecting nursing professionalism were self-esteem (b=.466, p <.001) and biomedical ethics (b=.311, p <.001). These factors affecting the nursing professionalism of the subjects were with an explanatory power of 33.8%. Conclusion: Therefore, it is necessary to increase self-esteem and biomedical ethics in order to enhance nursing professionalism in nursing first-year nursing students.
