A Musical Games Program Using the Z. Kodaly Method to Develop Musical Skills in Children with Down Syndrome

This study investigated the effectiveness of a musical games program based on the Kodaly approach in enhancing the musical skills of children with Down syndrome. A single-group pre-test-post-test experimental design was employed to evaluate the program’s impact. The participants were eleven children with Down syndrome residing at the Al-Falak Charitable Foundation in Akwa Al-Hissa, Kafr El-Zayat, Tanta, Gharbia, during the 2022-2023 academic year. They participated in a structured musical program grounded in Kodaly’s pedagogy, which emphasizes singing, rhythm, and auditory training through musical games. The program was implemented once a week for 60 minutes over a 20-week period. Data were collected using a musical skills observation checklist designed to assess core musical abilities, supported by a teacher’s guide for the implementation of Kodaly-based activities. The findings revealed statistically significant improvements in both overall musical performance and individual sub-skills, with post-test scores significantly higher than pre-test scores. Furthermore, the program demonstrated a high level of effectiveness in enhancing musical skills, underscoring the pedagogical value of the Kodaly approach for children with Down syndrome. These results highlight the potential of Kodaly-based musical interventions and recommend their broader application, alongside future studies exploring their long-term impact and integration within inclusive educational contexts.

본 연구는 다운증후군 아동의 음악적 기술 향상을 위해 코다이 접근법을 기반으로 한 음악 게임 프로그램의 효과를 검증하였다. 프로그램의 영향을 평가하기 위해 단일 집단 사전-사후 검사 실험 설계를 사용하였다. 연구 참여자는 2022-2023 학년도에 가르비아 탄타 카프르 엘자야트 아크와 알히사에 위치한 알팔락 자선재단에 거주하는 다운증후군 아동 11명이었다. 이들은 노래, 리듬, 청각 훈련을 강조하는 코다이 교육학에 기반한 체계적인 음악 프로그램에 참여하였으며, 프로그램은 20주 동안 주 1회 60분씩 실시되었다. 자료는 코다이 기반 활동의 실행을 위한 교사 안내서와 함께 핵심 음악 능력을 평가하도록 설계된 음악 기술 관찰 체크리스트를 통해 수집되었다. 연구 결과, 전체 음악 수행과 하위 기술 모두에서 통계적으로 유의한 향상이 나타났으며, 사후 검사 점수가 사전 검사 점수보다 유의하게 높았다. 또한 본 프로그램은 음악적 기술 향상에 높은 효과를 보여 다운증후군 아동을 위한 코다이 접근법의 교육적 가치를 입증하였다. 이러한 결과는 코다이 기반 음악 중재의 잠재력을 강조하며, 포용적 교육 환경에서의 장기적 영향과 통합 가능성을 탐구하는 후속 연구와 함께 그 광범위한 적용을 제안한다.
