Exploring the Implications of the IB MYP Projects for Middle School Career Education

본 연구는 IB MYP 프로젝트(공동체 프로젝트, 개인 프로젝트)의 수행 구조와 특징 및 진로교육과의 연계 가능성을 분석하고, 우리나라 중학교 진로교육에 주는 시사점을 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 IB MYP 프로젝트와 관련한 공식 문서와 선행 연구를 바탕으로 프로젝트의 실행 구조와 특징, 진로 연계 가능성을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, MYP 프로젝트는 학습자 중심의 경험적 학습을 기반으로 하여 자기주도성, 실천력, 책임감 등을 기를 수 있도록 설계되었다. 특히 학생의 흥미와 개인적 관심사를 출발점으로 하여 ‘탐구-행동-성찰’의 체계적인 학습 구조 속에서 학생들이 지식과 기능을 실생활에 적용하고 자신의 경험을 내면화함으로써 자기 이해를 심화하고 정체성을 형성하도록 지원한다. 이때 교사는 학습의 조력자이자 촉진자로서 학생의 성장을 돕는다. 무엇보다 MYP 프로젝트는 프로젝트의 계획과 운영에서 학생의 흥미와 관심사를 최우선으로 고려한다는 점, 그리고 학생들이 프로젝트를 수행하는 과정에서 관련 직업 세계에 대한 이해를 심화하고 진로 정체성을 형성해 나갈 수 있다는 점에서 진로교육과 밀접하게 연계될 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 분석 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 학생의 관심과 선택을 기반으로 한 자기 이해 및 진로 탐색 체계 구축, 모든 교사의 진로교육 참여 확대, 성찰 중심 진로교육의 필요성 등을 중학교 진로교육에 주는 시사점으로 도출하여 제안하였다.

This study aims to analyze the structure and characteristics of the IB MYP Projects (Community Project and Personal Project) and explore their implications for career education. Based on official IB documents, the implementation structures, key characteristics, and career-related features of the MYP projects were examined. The analysis revealed that MYP projects are designed to foster self-direction, practical skills, and a sense of responsibility based on a learner-centered, experiential learning model. Specifically, by starting with students’ interests and personal curiosities, the projects support students in applying knowledge and skills to real-world contexts and internalizing their experiences through a systematic inquiryaction-reflection cycle, thereby deepening self-understanding and forming identity. Furthermore, it was found that all teachers serve as facilitators and coaches, supporting students’ growth. The study suggests that MYP projects have a strong relevance to career education, as they prioritize student interest and personal initiative. The analysis indicated that through the project process, students can deepen their understanding of the world of work and cultivate career development competencies. Based on these findings, the study proposes several implications for Korean middle school career education, including the establishment of a self-understanding and career exploration system based on student interest, the expansion of career guidance participation to all teachers, and the integration of a reflection-centered approach.
