최근 인공 지능 기술의 급격한 발전은 언어 학습의 패러다임을 근본적으로 변화시키고 있다. 특히, ChatGPT와 같은 대화형 인공지능과 실시간 번역 애플리케이션의 보편화는 언어 장벽을 빠르게 허물고 있으며, 이러한 기술의 확산은 영어 학습의 필요성에 대한 회의적인 시각을 낳고 있다. 그러나 언어 교육은 단순히 문법과 어휘를 습득하는 기술적인 차원을 넘어, 사회적 상호작용, 문화적 소양, 창의력을 포함한 종합적인 교육과정이라는 점에서 AI기술로 완전히 대체될 수 없다. 따라서 본 연구는 AI시대의 급격한 기술 변화 속에서 영어 교육이 여전히 필요하다는 근거를 재확인하고, 단순한 지식 전달을 넘어 학습자의 창의성 발달을 위한 초등 영어교육의 방향에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 이에 다음과 같은 연구 문제를 제시한다. 첫째, AI시대에도 초등 영어교육이 필요한 이유는 무엇인가? 둘째, AI시대에 적합한 초등 영어 교육의 방향은 무엇인가?

The recent rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies has fundamentally transformed the paradigm of language learning. In particular, the widespread use of conversational AI such as ChatGPT and real-time translation applications is swiftly breaking down language barriers, fostering a skeptical view of the necessity of English education. However, language education is not merely a technical process of acquiring grammar and vocabulary; it is a comprehensive educational experience that encompasses social interaction, cultural literacy, and creativity, which cannot be fully replaced by AI technology. Therefore, this study aims to reaffirm the necessity of elementary English education amid the rapid technological changes of the AI era and to explore directions for fostering students’ creativity beyond simple knowledge transmission. Accordingly, the following research questions are posed. First, why is elementary English education still necessary in the AI era? Second, what is the appropriate direction for elementary English education in the AI era?
