A Study on the Symbolism of Dinosaurs

본 연구는 공룡이라는 존재가 지닌 다층적 상징성을 분석하고, 특히 모래놀이치료에서의 공룡 활용 사례를 통해 그 심리적 함의를 탐색하고자 하였다. 공룡은 대중문화, 문학, 예술, 정치 풍자 등 다양한 문화적 텍스트 속에서 권력과 지배, 모성성, 저항과 소외, 통과의례, 혼돈과 파괴로서의 상징을 획득해 왔다. 예컨대 공룡은 강력한 신체적 위세와 포식성을 바탕으로 절대 권력과 지배의 상징으로 기능하거나, 돌봄과 보호를 수행하는 모성적 양육의 상징으로 사용된다. 사회 규범에 편입되지 못하는 이방인으로서 소외와 저항을 표현하고, 정서적 성숙과 자아 확립의 여정을 대리하는 분리와 독립의 아이콘으로 확장된다. 또한, 인간의 통제를 벗어난 원초적 파괴 본능의 화신으로 재현된다. 내담자들의 모래놀이 장면에서 공룡은 약한 존재를 제압하며 권력과 지배의 상징으로, 서로를 물어뜯고 짓밟는 모습에서는 혼돈과 파괴의 상징으로 나타났다. 또한 먹이를 먹거나 빛을 비추는 장면은 의식화를 통한 분리와 독립을, 마을을 지키고 보호하는 공룡은 모성성을 상징하였다. 어머니의 부재 속에서 알들이 스스로 살아가는 장면은 분리와 독립, 모성성을 동시에 표현하였다. 인간과의 갈등 끝에 죽임을 당해 땅에 묻히고 오랜 세월 동안 단절된 존재로 남는 서사는 저항과 소외를 상징했다. 주체적으로 스스로를 가꾸고 위험을 극복하는 모습, 소진과 좌절을 지나 다시 활력을 회복하는 모습은 분리와 독립을 상징했다.

This study aimed to analyze the multilayered symbolism of dinosaurs and explore their psychological implications, particularly through cases in sandplay therapy. Dinosaurs have acquired symbolic meaning across various cultural texts—including popular media, literature, art, and political satire— representing power and dominance, motherhood, resistance and alienation, rites of passage, and chaos and destruction. For instance, dinosaurs often function as symbols of absolute authority and domination due to their immense physical presence and predatory nature. At the same time, they are depicted as nurturing and protective maternal figures. They also symbolize outsiders who fail to assimilate into social norms, expressing alienation and resistance, or serve as icons of emotional maturation and self-formation in the context of developmental rites of passage. Additionally, dinosaurs are portrayed as embodiments of primal, uncontrollable destructive instincts. In the sandplay scenes, dinosaurs appeared as symbols of dominance when subduing weaker creatures, and as representations of chaos and destruction when biting or trampling others. Scenes involving dinosaurs eating or illuminating light signified symbolic rites of passage, while dinosaurs protecting villages and receiving flowers symbolized maternal care. In particular, a scene where dinosaur eggs survive and support each other in the absence of the mother reflected both the symbolism of individuation through rites of passage and the transformation of motherhood.
