In The Function of Reason, Whitehead redefines the concept of reason. While in traditional philosophy, reason signified abstract entities or concepts representing essence, Whitehead describes reason dynamically from an organic perspective. By examining the history of speculative reason, he explains that speculative reason is closely related to the formation of cosmology. The mission of speculative reason is to create a creative future through thought. This thought encompasses observation, but goes beyond observation to encompass a vision of a generalized system of thought. Speculative reason strives not for stability, but for continuous progress. There are two ways in which speculative reason contributes to the formation of cosmology. First, speculative reason accepts the limitations of specific subjects within individual disciplines and seeks ways to reconstruct or expand categorical concepts within those limits. Second, we hope to build a cosmology that expresses the general characteristics of the world as they emerge from human interest. Cosmology is not limited to a specific discipline, but provides a framework of interpretation that expresses the inherent connections between individual disciplines. Through the discipline and methods of speculative reason introduced into the realm of human thought, we must pursue the heavens, the upward path. Through this process, humanity must constantly design an ideal cosmology.
