교육과 정치: 한나 아렌트의 관점

Education and Politics: Hannah Arendt’s Perspective

이 글은 한나 아렌트의 정치철학에서 교육과 정치가 어떤 관련을 가지는가 하는 점을 파악하기 위한 글이다. 교육을 직접 취급한 글에서 아렌트는 정치의 영역과 교육의 영역은 서로 ‘분리’되어야 한다는 주장을 제시하고 있다. 이 ‘분리’가 간과되는 경우, 교 육은 정치를 위한 수단으로 간주되어, 교육 본연의 역할을 하지 못하게 되기 때문이다. 그러나 또 한편, 아렌트의 정치철학에서 ‘탄생성의 실현’과 ‘탄생성의 보존’으로 규정되는 정치와 교육은 상호 분리 불가능한 관련을 지닌다고 볼 수 있다. 아렌트가 말하는 탄생성은 ‘경험적 사실’로서 주어져 있는 것이 아니라, ‘행위’를 통하여 실현되어야 하는 것이라고 보아야 한다. 이 점에서 보면, 탄생성의 보존과 실현은 사실상 동일한 것의 다른 이름이라고 말할 수 있으며, 교육과 정치는 ‘탄생성의 실현’이라는 동일한 목적을 상이한 방식으로 추구하는 일이 된다고 말할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to explicate the conceptual relations between education and politics in Hannah Arendt’s political philosophy. In her writings that directly address education, Arendt argues that the realms of politics and education must be ‘separated’. This separation is necessary because if it is disregarded, education is treated merely as a means to serve political ends, thereby failing to perform its essential roles that is to preserve the natality of child as ‘newcomer’. However, on the other hand, politics(defined as the ‘actualization of natality’) and education(defined as the ‘preservation of natality’) can be logically connected each other within Arendt’s political philosophy. Arendt’s concept of natality should not be viewed as an ‘empirical fact’ that is simply given, but rather as something that should be ‘actualized’ by way of ‘actions’ that are the political per excellence. From this perspective, the preservation and the actualization of natality can be said to be, in effect, different names for the same thing. Education and politics pursue the same goal of ‘the actualization of natality’ through different methods.
