당산나무와 모래놀이상자의 공간성에 대한 상징적 고찰

A Symbolic Exploration of the Spatial Structure of Dangsan Trees and the Sandtray

본 연구는 곽현정 (2014)의 당산나무 상징 연구를 확장하여, 당산나무의 공간적·상징적 구조를 분석하고, 이를 모래놀이치료(Sandplay Therapy)의 공간 상징 체계와 비교하여 두 체계가 공유하는 치유적 공간(Therapeutic Spatiality)의 의미를 살피고자 하였다. 한국 전통 신앙에서 당산나무는 하늘과 땅, 인간과 신, 삶과 죽음을 연결하는 신성한 중심으로 기능하며, 나무의 위치는 마을 공동체의 사회적·심리적 질서를 반영한다. 한편, 모래놀이치료는 분석심리학적 접근을 기반으로 무의식의 이미지를 모래상자라는 공간 안에서 표현·통합하게 함으로써 개인의 심리적 회복을 촉진한다. 비교연구 결과, 두 체계 모두 중심(Center), 경계(Boundary), 계층적 공간 구조(Hierarchical Spatial Structure)라는 공통적 특징을 갖고 있으며, 이를 통해 통합과 치유가 이루어진다. 또한, 당산나무 의례와 모래놀이치료의 상징적·공간적 구조는 각각 집단적·개인적 차원의 심리적 질서와 영적 균형을 지원하며, 인간과 자연, 의식과 무의식, 개인과 공동체를 연결하는 심리·상징적 축(axis)으로 기능함을 확인하였다. 이러한 상징적 유비를 바탕으로 본 연구는 Tree–Tray Axis Model을 제안하고, 치유적 공간이‘경계–중심–계(hierarchical transition) 과정을 통해 심리적 통합이 이루어짐을 설명한다. 본 연구는 전통 의례 공간과 현대 심리치료 공간 간의 상호 해석적 관계를 제시하며, 치유적 공간 개념을 문화·심리적 맥락에서 통합적으로 이해할 수 있는 근거를 제공한다.

This study expands upon Kwak (2014) research on the symbolic structure of Dangsan trees by examining their spatial and symbolic dimensions, and by comparing these with the spatial symbolism of sandplay therapy to explore their shared features of therapeutic spatiality. In Korean shamanic tradition, the Dangsan tree functions as a sacred center that connects heaven and earth, human and divine, life and death, while its location reflects the social and psychological order of the village community. In contrast, sandplay therapy, grounded in analytical psychology, facilitates psychological healing by enabling the expression and integration of unconscious images within the bounded space of the sandtray. The comparative analysis revealed that both systems share three fundamental features— center, boundary, and hierarchical spatial structure—through which integration and healing occur. Furthermore, the symbolic and spatial configurations of Dangsan rituals and sandplay therapy each sustain the psychological order and spiritual balance at collective and individual levels, functioning as a psychological–symbolic axis that connects nature and humanity, consciousness and the unconscious, and the individual and the community. Based on this symbolic correspondence, this study proposes the Tree–Tray Axis Model, which explains how therapeutic space mediates psychological integration through a hierarchical transition from boundary to center to transcendence. The findings highlight the interpretive relationship between traditional ritual space and modern psychotherapeutic space, providing a cultural–psychological framework for understanding the integrative function of healing space.
