종교에서 무종교로: 전환기의 종교교육 패러다임

From religion to non-religion: the paradigm of religious education in the transition period

[연구 목적] 본 논문은 무종교시대로의 진행이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지를 검토하고, 무종교시대의 종교교육이 지향해야 하는 바가 무엇인지를 밝히는 것이 목적이다. 무종교시대로의 진행은 특정 지역만의 문제가 아니다. 대표적인 기독교권으로 분류되던 유럽은 무종교인으로 넘쳐난다. 한국도 마찬가지다. 무종교인의 숫자가 종교인수를 넘어섰다. 무종교시대로 진행되는 이유를 밝히고, 종교교육 패러다임의 변화에 대해 탐색할 것이다. [연구 내용] 본 논문에서는 무종교시대로의 진행 이유를 전쟁과 갈등을 낳은 종교의 그림자에서 찾으며, 한국 사회에서의 무종교 원인을 종교와 종교지도자들의 일탈에서 비롯된 것임을 밝힌다. 그리고 무종교현상이 두드러지게 나타나는 영국과 북유럽의 종교지형을 살펴보고, 이들의 종교교육을 검토한다. 전환기의 종교교육은 패러다임의 전환을 필요로 한다. 한국의 종교교육 또한 패러다임의 전환을 필요로 하는 바, 종교교육이 지향할 바를 밝힌다. [결론] 무종교시대로의 진행은 정해진 수순이다. 그러나 무종교시대로의 진행이 마냥 부정적인 것만은 아니다. 무종교시대가 될 수밖에 없었던 원인을 밝히고, 이를 통해 전환점을 마련할 수 있기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 종교교육이 어떤 방향으로 진행해야 하는지에 대해 진지하게 고민할 수 있기 때문이다. 종교교육의 패러다임의 전환이 더 이상 공염불로 끝나는 상황은만들지 말아야 할 것이다.

[Objective] The purpose of this study is to examine the implications of the progression toward a non-religious era and to identify the orientations that religious education ought to pursue within this context. [Contents] In this paper, the reasons for the progression toward a non-religious era are traced to the shadow of religion—namely, the wars and conflicts historically associated with it—and the causes of non-religiosity in Korean society are identified as stemming from the misconduct and deviance of religious institutions and their leaders. The study further examines the religious landscape of the United Kingdom and the Nordic countries, where non-religious trends are particularly prominent, and analyzes their approaches to religious education. In times of transition, religious education requires a paradigmatic shift. Accordingly, this paper also delineates the directions that religious education in Korea must pursue as it undergoes such a transformation. [Conclusions] The progression toward a non-religious era is an inevitable development. However, this transition is not exclusively negative. By elucidating the underlying causes that have made such an era unavoidable, it becomes possible to identify critical turning points for reflection and reform. Moreover, this recognition invites a serious reconsideration of the future direction of religious education. It is imperative that the call for a paradigmatic shift in religious education no longer remain an empty slogan, but instead lead to substantive and meaningful change.
